PVT Squeakems was a mouse featured in the Bill Murray movie: 'Scrooged.' Murray's character pretended to almost staple tiny antlers to his head. In real life, when the cameras weren't rolling, he actually DID. Squeakems went nuts and started killing everyone on set. This is a little known story. Thankfully, Santa and his Woodland Creature Commandos enlisted him in order to put his murderous tendencies to good use.

BOOM! Hello my friends. Hello internet. You know what? I missed you. How is everyone doing? Dang, it's been awhile. Well, I thought it would be time to recap our recent adventures to the land of the Big Apple. See we have this new project called 'Hero Action Persons'... I may have mentioned it before, I'm not sure. See we put our love, our passion, our peanut butter, and all of the hot sauce we could find- mixed it all together and then started writing and drawing and coloring a comic and we thought it was time to share it with the world! That's a really long sentence. We got some sample books printed, made all of these CD ROMS (yeah I still call them CD ROMS, what of it?) and about 10 or more flyers to hand to ALL of the massive crowds that would run to Graphicly and download all of our comics. That's right. We had our eyes on the prize. It was time to harrass the fans, and the publishers at one of the biggest conventions in the world. No one was safe.

Right off the bat this girl jumped in front of the camera and was all 'take a picture of me holding your best-selling book!' What could I do. This is what we call 'groupies.' I pretty much called the FBI on her because she was so dang excited.

And so then I got inspired and jumped in front of the camera too. Check out that HOT watch I'm wearing there. That's the kind of thing you wear to the convention TO GET NOTICED. Kmart has some great selections nowadays, plus they're very affordable. That's good advice right there. We call that 'money in the bank.' BOOM! You can see that's the New York Comic Con behind me. That's what I was talking about like 2 paragraphs and/or sentences earlier. Just wait till we get inside. There was WAY more than 10 people inside. I'm not even joking.

See what I mean. And this was only the first day. There's not even crazy costumes yet. You can't even imagine it.... Man this is a bad picture. I should really go back on Facebook and try to get some more off of someone else's account, but then there's that whole 'legal' thing. That sucks. Well, just imagine there's like 800 people dressed as THE PREDATOR in this picture and you'll get the idea what Saturday and Sunday was all about. Luckily I hadn't taken a shower in a long time so I was almost totally invisible to them.

So right away as you can see in this picture I got to work. Yeah, I don't like...read comics or uh- shop for wicked awesome toys or anything like that. No. I was pure business. No fear. Just go right out there and impress the heck out of all of those publishers. You can see I'm totally in the zone right now.

Later that night I ran into almost the entire Zuda Comics right there. That was an epic night. MPD57, Alex Vidal, and Mr. Epting the Spelunker. I think here I was trying to warn everyone about THE PREDATORS. I was ready to protect them with my camouflauge. No one was having any of it. I was really ready to throw down and bring the heat though. Just look into my eyes. Yeah.. I know. It's intense.

Here is a picture of the T600 (pretty much the baddest Terminator in my opinion. And I do mean Bad in the righteous sense. because I don't have any pictures of what happend later...Well because again, there's that whole 'legal' thing- but let me just tell you: Perhaps more than one non-alcoholic beverage was consumed by one or more of those people that night.) I also ran into some more great Zuda friends and amazing people in the early hours of the morn. At that point, I can vouch for myself that I was in no condition to operate any thing like a camera. Sorry about that. But I did see the Timonys, Rob Berry, Dan Govar, Kevin Colden, Kwanza, and several others that shouted their names to me in the roar of awesomeness of that night. Just imagine it. Your imagination will do better than any photos I could post. Or I could put up some more pictures of The T600. I've got a lot of those. Man that's an awesome robot.

And so then I met up with Alex again and him and I conspired to get our hands on all of the original art we saw there. Alex had some really good ideas using explosives. I'm not sure they're going to let him visit the USA again, but the CIA did agree those were some totally wicked ideas about how to steal Jack Kirby pages.

Finally, at the end of the trip, I got to talk to this guy who insisted he was the CEO of a REALLY big comic book publisher. I couldn't really understand what publisher he worked for, but I totally gave him my card. I'm sure we'll be hearing something soon. It's about that book we're trying to publish. Did I mention that?

And here's a picture of Lobo. Did you ever read that one? That's the stuff I say.
Well, I'm pretty sure this is the most I've ever written on this blog or anytime since the last day of school in the 6th grade when I had detention and had to write an essay about why I was sorry for something I totally didn't do. I'll talk about that next post.

So we gots a *new* comic out on this excellent site called Graphicly!
It was something I wrote and drew my first year in HK. I was never too happy with my writing on it so it's been sitting on my shelf for years. Until now! Adam Barnett (who wrote the book I've been working on this year) swooped in and re-did all the speech bubbles. The funny thing was though, that I only sent him (1) page at a time so he never knew exactly where he was going with it. It's a crazy fun ride. Check it out won't you? Did we mention it's FREE FREE FREE? We're hoping to use it as the icebreaker for our 5 issue series/book called 'Hero Action Persons'. More on that later though. (I keep saying that don't I?)

Recently I drew a version of the cover for Ghostrider #40 for the Covered blog:

While I've been working on the book with Adam Barnett, I kept this Ghostrider thing going on in the background. I used it as a warm up while I worked on pages, or if I just needed to sit in front of Photoshop for a few minutes everyday. So today I just wanted to show my process on how I got to the finished piece.

The first thing was choosing which cover I wanted to do. I recently picked up the first two volumes of the awesome Marvel Essential Ghostrider series. So this is like the first 50 issues of Ghostrider in two volumes published in B&W phone book size books. This image jumped out at me:

I liked working from the B&W image so I could color it without being influenced by the 'real' colors at all.
So the next step was to just draw ol' GR in my own style. This is the 'getting to know you' phase of the drawing.

SInce the original cover is full of lines and has this gritty raw power, I wanted to see if I could go ultra clean and sharp. I thought it would make a nice contrast. So the next step was to take out the ol' lightbox and start cleaning.

I also drew all of the background elements separately so I could move them all around in Photoshop to my liking.

So then after some manouvering in PS I came up with this:

Then it was on to hours of coloring goodness. PS offers so many different color combinations so easily sometimes it's hard to make up your mind. I eventually got to this one:

But then at the last minute, I decided on this one:

And that is, as they say, is that! :)
Now back to the book...

Home Stretch...

A little sneakity peakity from a book in the works. I promised myself I wouldn't say much about it yet, so I can't, or I'll beat myself up. Or the writer will erase me. But I will say that it's the longest comic I've ever worked on... and I only have a few blocks of pages left to draw and then it's all done. The guy who wrote the script, OK, fine -it's Adam Barnett- put a lot of classic fun into it and there's a lot of heart in there too. It's also one heck of a blast to draw. There's also a really pretty girl who's coloring it all. Ok. That's all I can say for now. I can say no more. More soon. Very soon!

Just wanted to update a few updates before March escapes from us. I'm working hard, drawing like a mad man. I think I've drawn more in the last few weeks than at any other time in my life. It's a great feeling. I feel alive. Like Kurt Russell in 'Big Trouble in Little China' when he drinks the ancient Chinese medicine. =D

This is another one written by that wild Irishman, Rory McConville with dewdles by me.
It's probably the most serious in tone comic I've ever worked on, but it's still got enough weird abstractness to keep it good and strange. Well we hope to get back to it someday. I know Rory's worked a lot on the script and it goes in many unexpected and fun directions. Lotsa cool stuff to draw. Well I gotta go eat pancakes now. Have a MOST EXCELLENT New Years everyone!

Today I'm putting 'Hotel Grotendous' up on Drunk Duck. This is a comic written by Rory McConville with droowrings by me. It's one of those where I had the title, some character designs, and the beginnings of an idea, and then asked Rory if he could help write it. I also told him to feel free to go wherever he wanted with it. Well, Rory didn't disappoint. :D Happily it's one of the weirdest comics I've ever had the pleasure to work on. Monkeyman Sam Little provided the logo and we were off and running. I hope some day we'll get back to it, because it's just too dang fun.

End of the Year Sale at Ostley Central!

I've got a few comics from some months back that we were prepping for Zuda. Then of course, Zuda broke up, so there they sat on my desktop. I was thinking since it's the end of the year, why not get them out there at least and who knows what may happen?

As 2010 draws to a bloody close, we are proud to present to you another project born of too much sugar and bent brains! Adam Barnett and I have been working closely together the last few months on a project called Hero Action Persons. It's an epic story that's an incredible amount of fun to draw. I'll be sharing more about it soon, but right now I've got to keep pretty tight lipped about it. While we've been hitting the drawing boards on that one, I came across an old project called Holey Moley. I was never really happy with my writing on it, so I asked Adam if he could re-do all the word balloons on it. For fun I told him I'd only send him one page at a time so he'll never really know what's hitting him. It's a great experiment, plus I just like to torture him. So Adam's re-christened it Snatcher Bodies and so far we've put up the first 2 pages on Drunk Duck under our I2D Studios banner. I think we'll be updating that once a week. Take a looksee and let us know what you think!

In other news, Luc Herbots keeps blasting out the awesome TKMGK pages. Check out this slice from page 20:

We are getting close to Page 30 which will be the end of Issue 1. I'm getting excited to break out the script pages and start polishing up Issue 2 now that I know Luc is along for the ride. When I began Issue 1, I was planning on drawing it myself, but then too much stuff was going on and I couldn't keep up with it. It's awesome that Luc has taken it over because it's turned into something better than I had envisioned.

And then there's the Monkeyface:

Sam has given me the script up until page 60 now, and I've got about 10 more pages to draw and then I'll be there too. We're planning on taking this one to 180 pages, so 60 will be a big milestone. In Zuda language, this would have been the end of Season One. In the next few months, I've plotted out my schedule at the school I work at and am ready to devote even more time to Monkeyface. So 2011 is going to be an incredible year for all these projects methinks.

Hey guess what? I was just part of a podcast on Friday. No this is not some experimental sculpture. This is what the internet was made for. It's like you and your friends were given free reign at a radio station. I got to blather on about myself and talk comics for an ungodly amount of time. Highly recommend it. I'll give with the link as soon as they post it. Not to build it up or anything, but it may be the single most important thing you ever listen to in your life. And remember, the world is going to end in 2012, John Cusack will be the only survivor, so if you are not him, although I do know he is an avid follower of this blog, there's not much time left. The Man with a Thousand Names

24 Hour Comics Day was great. I got loopy, drank a lot of caffeine, giggled uncontrollably, and hallucinated people walking around the table. And then I started drawing. Ended up not going down the Nixon II road after all. I decided to use the time to work on another project that needed some attention. Nixon II will have to wait. Someday soon though. Can't wait to get into that post apocalyptic battleground.
We hosted 12 of the hours at the school, so at about 10 am a whole lotta kids came in to work on paintings, drawings, and of course the real art: comics!

It's Monday night in the land of Hong and Kong and I want to update you with some of my latest comics.
First we have the new TKMGK page. This is written by me and drawn and colored by Luc Herbots:

In a few days time its gonna be the 24 Hour Comic Day. Last year I swore I would never do it again. Now as the day draws nigh I just can't resist. Haruka is talking about doing a big 'ole painting too. So I'm starting to mull ideas around. Last year, I worked with Sam Little and Rob Berry and Steve Steiner (my partners in pink bunny vengeance) and we did a Lil' Hammer story. This year my thoughts keep going back to an idea I was bouncing around with Sam a while back called NIXON II. I think it may be time to explore that idea a little more with some sleep deprived, caffeine induced pencils. Oh yeah!

Uploading a bit early this week because it's going to be a craaaazy weekend! :)

Welly welly well me droogies. It's been awhile. Been a mad, mad, month or so of drawing different comic projects and pitches. I've been working like a maniac with a lot of good people, and a lot of fun collaborations are bubbling up all over the place. I feel like I've ordered the appetizer sampler and it's ALL good. I can't specifically talk about anything right now, becuase we're all waiting to see what happens with them. So I'll be very general about the projects. One of them is martial arts themed, another is kind of post-apocalyptic with monsters, another is a futuristic fantasy story, another is a scary yarn about some floating heads, and yet another has a modern day setting with some major surrealness thrown in. Actually another project (that I'm not drawing, but helping write) is also post apocalyptic with a politcal edge. Well, loosely politcal. Very loosely. Heheh. And finally, another one that I finally got to do some sketches for today is with my friend Maria. This one is not for a comic, but I'll talk more about it as we go. But for now all I got to say is ARF! :)

Here's some progress from a new project at school.
We've got these cold gray walls all over so we tried to bring some bright cheerful energy into the mix. I hope we can continue it...I can see some twisting tree roots and floating leafs all over the ceiling and pipes and continuing on down the adjacent walls. Should be cool!

Lost Season 5

Last year Haruka and I watched the first episode of the first season. We were like, "Let's see what all the fuss is about." And then, because of the internet, we thought, "Well let's just watch a couple more." A few hours later we were in the store slobbering over the first four seasons. Gimme. Gimme. But I remember thinking, 'We'll just watch the first season and then forget about it." Of course once you get to the last episode of that season you realize it's one of the biggest cliff hangers in tv history. You have to keep watching. So then, God help us, we were hooked. After we got to the end of the 4th season we knew we'd have to wait awhile till they released Season 5. Well, it's been about a year now and we're picking it up again. Addicted doesn't even begin to describe it. We're sick and we need help. I would write more but we still have to watch 2 more episodes. And then about 16 making-of documentaries. I hope we can remember to eat and go to the bathroom while this is going on.

I've been a fan of Welles for a long time now. Although my favorite director of all time may be Billy Wilder, I still love a good Orson Welles movie. This book (This is Orson Welles) is an exhaustive Q & A between him and Peter Bogdonavich. It's really funny and insightful and is full of all of these bizarre little stories. It's also full of strange statements I don't fully understand, that I like to quote randomly in my loudest voice: "Comedy is life in a long shot. Tragedy is life in a close up." Stuff like that.
I'm going to do a few illustrations inspired by passages in the book and post them up here every once in awhile. And smoke a cigar as I post them.

so i got bored with that 'n' thing. meh. this comic just slipped out of a mess of of books. i must have thrown it into my bag when i was back home last summer. ah, what a goodie. probably my favorite 'two-face' cover ever. and the sprouse art is awesome. not to mention it has a great story.
this seems to be the week for comics from 1990.
my version of 'wolverine: the jungle adventure' is up over at Robert Goodin's awesome Covered site. ah, memories.

I picked this up a couple weeks ago. It was weird. I started to read it. It's like a 300 page graphic novel, and usually you can read one of those within a few hours. But one of those things, I was only able to read a few pages here and there. It was a slow burn. I fell asleep quite a few times trying to read it before bed. And about a third of the way into it I was feeling- ah, so so. Nothing special. I don't know why it has all these worshipping reviews. But then, I don't know. It started to grow on me. Pretty soon I realized I had been reading this thing for over 2 weeks. So one day, I sat down and said, "I am going to finish this bastard today." And so then I did and WOW.
The shining lights in my comic book history goes like this:
The Dark Knight Returns pretty much kicked the doors down for me.
The first 4 graphic novels of the TMNT also fired me up.
The frantic energy of Kyle Baker's DIck Tracy books did it too.
Then it was Mcfarlane's work on early Spawn- which got me obsessed with lines.
Then Sin City came out, and that was about the only comics I read for years.
With a Hellboy here and there...
Then I picked up the first '100 Bullets' collection on a whim and fell completely in love with that series- up until about the 8th book when I think it started to get TOO gritty and there were no more characters to love. I may have to go back and finish it.
With the exception of The Dungeon series and everything Lewis Trondheim does, I'd say for the last 6 or 7 years I've just been buying books based on the art. So I own a lot of awesome looking stuff- but not too much with totally gripping stories...
Now there's Marquis, and I feel a re-awakening. It manages to remind you of dozens of different things you've read before, but somehow manages to be completely fresh and different from all of them.
I can't reccommend this enough.
Plus, it's dang creepy.
Ordinarily people in comics draw monsters that you just want to keep looking at. I mean, if you saw a comic book monster in real life, you would just stand there and admire it. Davis' monsters are really disturbing and twisted. You don't want to linger on them. They make you a little nauseous.
This book is amazing.

Iron Man is Batman

So I just bought Iron Man: Enter The Mandarin. This is the first Iron Man comic I've ever read. I remember watching the movie and thinking: "Wow, Iron Man is a LOT like Batman." Now after reading this mini-series my suspicions are confirmed. Iron Man IS Batman. WTF? The art was great in this comic by the way. Dude named Eric Canete. Really flowing organic style. Reminds me of Denys Cowan. I think he's French. But I digress. Even the villains are straight outta Batman. The Mandarin is Ra's Al Ghul. And another guy who looks exactly like the Scarecrow whose name is, (are you ready?) SCARECROW. That being said, I thought it was great. It made me wonder what it would be like if it was a Batman book. Oh yeah, it would be EXACTLY the same. Come ON Marvel. At least give him different baddies to fight.

I just made this poster and posted it around campus. (The smiling head is by Rudy Dean Guara) Hopefully we get a lot of people ready to ride this crazy train. I'm going to be there for the full 24- but I guess the school doesn't want kids being on campus overnight. Well, even 12 hours is a heckuva long time to draw. Last year was a lot of fun- so I'm looking forward to this one. Get the Red Bull ready!
